Flat Feet / Posterior Tibial Tendonitis

Flat feet are a common condition of the foot structure and are generally associated with excessive pronation. Painful progressive flat foot with involvement of the tendon tibialis posterior produces inflammation and if left untreated, may lead to severe disability and chronic pain. People are predisposed to posterior tibial tendonitis if they have flat feet and abnormal attachment of the tendon to the bones in the midfoot.

Common treatment involves:

  • Immobilisation
  • Supportive footwear
  • Taping or bracing
  • Orthotic devices

In the case of a damaged or torn tendon, surgical intervention may be necessary.
