Orthotics and Footwear for the Gold Coast

Most patients visit a Podiatrist because they have foot pain. In many cases this is a result of a faulty relationship between the bones and muscles of the foot. Some of the common conditions causing pain are excessive pronation, flat feet, muscular imbalance, persistent ankle sprains, bunions, corns and calluses. Each of these problems has a different cause, but can be treated successfully with prescription orthotics.

What exactly are prescription orthotics?

Prescription orthotics are custom-made devices designed to treat particular foot problems. Just as no two feet are exactly alike no two prescription orthotics are alike.

How are customised 3D scanned orthotics made?

Custom orthotics are only as effective as the exam that precedes them. In addition, custom fitting of these devices to appropriate shoes is equally important. The patient steps into an oval-shaped opening in the top of the Dr. Comfort Scan. Stretched across that hole is a patent-pending, transparent membrane that suspends the patient’s foot several inches off the ground. (The membrane is swapped out between patients.)

While the foot is suspended in space thanks to the membrane, a laser rotates around the foot below, running on an oval track that sits on the base of the Dr. Comfort Scan. This laser is constantly shooting tiny beams of laser light at the foot to collect 30,000 data points. These data points let the Dr. Comfort scan assemble a true 3D map of the patient’s foot.

Once the scan is taken, it appears on an accompanying wireless tablet that works with the Dr. Comfort Scan so that the practitioner can instantly see the scan of the foot and review it with the patient. And if something doesn’t look right, then another scan can be taken right then and there.

How do orthotics help?

Orthotics are made to fit comfortably into your shoes and be worn at all times. As your foot rests comfortably in the orthotic, it is gently and consistently forced into the correct position for walking, running and standing. Pressure points, improper rotation of the foot, and painful muscle strains are all eliminated because your foot is placed in a position to function properly.

How long do orthotics have to be worn?

Orthotics should be comfortable and help your foot work in the best position so you will not want to stop wearing them. Orthotics do not cure foot problems any more than glasses cure your vision problems. Orthotics modify the function of your foot as long as you continue to wear them. Remember, your feet are the foundation of your entire body. They do an awful lot of work each day. Even the slightest misalignment of the bones and muscles can cause a lot of discomfort. Often, back and neck pain is the result of foot problems. Obtaining and consistently wearing prescription orthotics can be the best investment you can make in your overall well-being.

Readymade orthotics

Our office also offers pre-made orthotics. While pre-made orthotic inserts help people with mild symptoms, they normally cannot correct the wide range of symptoms that prescription foot orthosis can. They are a more cost-effective alternative however they can be prescribed after detailed patient examination for maximum benefit and best fit.
